A Guide to the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery

Located in Camp Sherman, Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery is found along the Metolius River. Construction on the natural attraction took place in 1947, and it has undergone several improvements since then. The hatchery is a great place to learn about the life cycle of fish and the critical habitat that is the Metolius River. 

Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., there is no bad time of year to visit this park-like setting. The purpose of the hatchery is the incubation and rearing of several types of fish for recreational fishing, like kokanee salmon and rainbow trout. They also incubate and rear spring chinook and summer steelhead for a reintroduction program in the upper Deschutes Basin. Be sure to read the interpretive signage to learn more about these species and their importance. While here, you can also see other wildlife, including wading birds, birds of prey, and hoofed mammals. 

The hatchery is found inside the Deschutes National Forest. After your visit to this spot, spend more time outdoors hiking some of the nearby trails that’ll take you through the tree-covered landscape.
