Black Butte Invitational the start of a new, old tradition

New tournament tees off on August 18, and combines the best of some of Black Butte Ranch’s most long-standing tournaments There is no better new tradition than an old tradition. That might seem like a contradiction, but it’s exactly the foundation for the inaugural Black Butte Invitational, which is scheduled for Aug. 18-20. Among Black Butte Ranch’s Signature Golf Events, the Black Butte Invitational was designed to be team-oriented with fun formats. This idea is hardly a new one. It was the same premise that made The Homeowner Guest Classic Invitational one of Black Butte Ranch’s most longstanding traditions. [...]

Five reasons why golf is ideal for families

By this time in the summer, parents are searching high and low for fun, healthy activities for their children. Those activities are even better if they can be shared with the entire family. With understandably tight budgets, golf can mistakenly be discarded as one of those activities. But Black Butte Ranch has always wanted to make the game accessible for families. In fact, it’s with families in mind that Black Butte Ranch was ever created. For this reason, Black Butte Ranch offers a Family Golf Rate: Two junior golfers and two adults can play together everyday at Big Meadow [...]

Coming in August: With Adult/Child Golf School, Black Butte Invitational, August a time to bond

Golf can be the most solitary of games, often played as much between the ears as on the course. But golf is also typically best shared, making the game a paradox of sorts. Those who prefer their golf with a little companionship will be in luck in August at Black Butte Ranch, which will host a slew of golf events and learning programs in the month ahead that double as special bonding opportunities. This includes Black Butte Ranch’s Adult/Child Three-Day Golf Schools, which are open to golfers of all abilities and are designed for a young golfer to share [...]

Black Butte Ranch ramping up for tournament season

One sure sign Black Butte Ranch is at peak-season perfection is when Phil Lagao becomes hyper-focused on the detail work — the little things that really only him and his staff on the maintenance crew really notice. Lagao, the longtime superintendent at Black Butte Ranch, is always busy. But the tasks change as the season progresses. This has been an atypical year at Black Butte Ranch, after a snowy winter left both Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow under a blanket of snow for far longer than would be considered normal. But finally, Lagao is doing the kind of work [...]

What is the best way to book a tee time at Black Butte Ranch?

The move to all things digital has revolutionized the way all of us communicate with one another. We book flights, consume news, and even read about our favorite golf resorts online. But booking a tee time online is another matter. Golfers have been relatively slow in warming to online booking, gradually shifting from phone call to online marketplace. In fact, in 2015 it was estimated that only 15 percent to 20 percent of golf bookings were made online, compared with more than 50 percent of hotel and plane bookings. Black Butte Ranch has seen a similar trend. The vast [...]

Golf tip: Small adjustments will produce better tee shots on windy days

A windy day can be menacing foe to a golfer. Sure, we all know the wind will blow the ball off target. But the real damage to a round can come from the psychological toll wind plays, forcing uncertainty into the swing as the round goes along. No matter where you play golf, wind will be an issue. At Black Butte Ranch, Central Oregon’s High Desert breezes can creep up from time to time, too. So most of us know that unsure feeling, and it’s on the tee box where it so often rears its ugly head. We have [...]

Black Butte Ranch staff fares well at Oregon Open Invitational

To work in golf it helps to love golf. Black Butte Ranch’s staff certainly proves that rule, with a staff filled with players who truly love competing against the best golfers from around the Pacific Northwest. Four members of Black Butte Ranch’s golf staff competed this week in the 2017 Oregon Open Invitational, which ended Thursday and is among the major championships each year in the PGA of America’s Pacific Northwest Section. Two made the 36-hole cut at a windy and wild Juniper Golf Club, in a loaded Oregon Open field of more than 190 professionals and amateurs. Caleb [...]
