Conditions report: Courses springing to life as weather warms

The striping on Big Meadow No. 5 is really beginning to show. Spring has officially grabbed hold here in Central Oregon. And with each passing day the golf courses at Black Butte Ranch spring back to life. For the maintenance crew at Black Butte Ranch there are few sweeter views than both Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow beginning to return to their peak-season glory. “You can actually see the striping in the fairway out there,” Phil Lagao, Black Butte Ranch’s longtime superintendent, said of Big Meadow. “It’s starting to come back to life and look like a golf course [...]

Golf tip: Start the season off by working on your chipping

Golfers have so many ways to get ready for the golf season. But most of us amateurs probably make it harder on ourselves than we need to make it. Our first instinct often is to head to the range, grab the driver and work out that dormant golf swing by punishing golf balls one after another with our full swing. Or worse yet, we skip the preparation altogether and rush out to the first tee. This, you might expect, is likely not be the best approach to knocking off that winter rust. Working on the short game, particularly greenside [...]

Wonderful weather, annual hat special on deck at Black Butte Ranch

The view Wednesday morning from Big Meadow could not have been better. Black Butte Ranch will begin one of its best deals of the season on Friday, and boy, it could not have come at a better time. Through the month of April, a golfer can play unlimited golf at Black Butte Ranch for $44 (cart is an additional $10 per person). In addition, golfers will receive a free Black Butte Ranch golf cap with a paid green fee. Better than an excellent bargain, the warm, dry Central Oregon sun will make its first real appearance of the [...]

Central Oregon Shootout’s appeal is in part its team format

Golf tournaments played in formats that utilize team play are considered a tool by some that can help grow the game of golf. It stands to reason. Golf played with the help of a partner is often far more relaxing and fun. Something about knowing that the pressure of each shot can be shared with a friend helps put a golfer at ease. Black Butte Ranch has seen first hand the power of competing with a partner over the last 14 years with the Central Oregon Shootout. The tournament has grown from small, local tournament to the second-largest annual [...]

Black Butte Ranch punch cards, season passes designed to appeal to Central Oregon golfers

Black Butte Ranch aims to be among Central Oregon’s greatest golf attractions. And with two award-winning golf courses in Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow — not to mention a host of amenities that include our new $11.5 million Lakeside Complex — we think we do a pretty good job. But Black Butte Ranch also wants to cater to Central Oregon residents, and that hospitality is certainly extended to our two championship golf courses. We know that Central Oregon golfers are always in search of a good deal. It stands to reason. With Central Oregon claiming five of Golfweek magazine’s [...]

Big Meadow emerging from winter in fine shape

With all the mild weather of late the feeling that golf was near would have been impossible to ignore. Well, come Friday it will be more than just a feeling. The golf season at Black Butte Ranch will officially tee off on Friday, March 4, with the first nine holes opening at Big Meadow. Next week, all 18 holes will be open for golfers. For those of us who have been itching to shake the winter golf blues, such news could not have come any sooner. After all, a golfer can only take so many “ghost” swings in front [...]

Black Butte Ranch tees up golf show season in Portland

February can be a fantastic time for golfers. And that is not just because this has been an unseasonably warm week here in Oregon. This month marks the beginning of the golf show season, which is always a time we look forward to here at Black Butte Ranch. First up is the Portland Golf Show, which begins on Friday and runs through Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center. Then in April we will pay a visit to Sacramento, California, home of the 2016 Haggin Oaks Golf Expo. First things first, though. We will be on hand in Portland with [...]

Big Meadow’s hours changing, but not closed for the season yet

The weather is most certainly turning and frost is now in the air. With Halloween 2015 in the past and the calendar flipped to November, Black Butte Ranch is down to the waning moments of the golf season. With Glaze Meadow already closed for the season, superintendent Phil Lagao and his staff have turned their attention to Big Meadow. That means the process of getting Big Meadow ready for the winter has begun. As a result, Big Meadow’s hours are changing. Big Meadow’s driving range will continue to stay open daily, so long as the snow and ice stays [...]

Course conditioning stood out this golf season

Another golf season is coming to a close. For Black Butte Ranch, 2015 marked 45 years since first becoming a premier golf destination in Central Oregon. Of course, with each year that goes by more memories are made. And every golf season is just a little bit different. The golf season of 2015 was no exception. What most made this year stand out? Start with an unfathomably mild winter that helped the season tee off at Big Meadow on Feb. 14, by far the earliest opening in recent memory. “I think we have been open once in February since [...]

Tip: Get ready for golf season, even in winter

One not need be a golf professional, superintendent or meteorologist to know that the golf season is winding down. The sunscreen has already been put away, and it won’t be long before the clubs are gathering dust in the garage until we get to spring. Yes, Glaze Meadow is already closed for the season and Big Meadow will not be far behind. That means significant time away from the golf course. But golfers are making a mistake if they abandon their games during the winter. Any golfer can take action in the colder months to be ready for the [...]
