GolfBoards a hit at Black Butte Ranch

GolfBoards were introduced to Black Butte Ranch just a few months ago, but they are already becoming a fixture at Big Meadow. Part golf cart, part surfboard, GolfBoards have been getting a test run at Black Butte Ranch since first being introduced to our fairways in June. But with four in our fleet, the GolfBoards have hardly had a moments rest. The GolfBoards have been such a success that Black Butte Ranch is planning on not only keeping its four for the 2017 golf season, but also expanding the fleet. “It has really been fun to see golfers gravitate [...]

Pro tip: Keeping your head down will help avoid thin shots

In your hand is a club you trust and you you have just the right yardage to paydirt. You feel solid and confident standing over the ball. Then you put what you think is the perfect swing on the ball, look up to see a great shot, then watch helplessly as the ball goes skipping down the fairway no more than an inch or two off the ground. Golf offers many frustrations, but this has to be among the most common. From bogey-making amateurs to the best golfers in the world, those thin shots that produce “wormburners” creep into [...]

Nike Golf equipment discounted at Black Butte Ranch, but not gone yet

The news last week that Nike was getting out of the golf equipment business certainly reverberated around the golf world. For those who have been sleeping, or actually going out and enjoying the gorgeous summer weather, Nike Golf will no longer manufacturer clubs, bags and balls. That doesn’t mean that Nike Golf equipment suddenly disappeared off the shelves. In fact, the swoosh is still a fairly prominent fixture at Black Butte Ranch’s two golf shops. But because of Nike Golf’s departure from the equipment-making business, Nike equipment has never been less expensive. For golf clubs, 2016 model Nike drivers [...]

Family Golf Nights at Black Butte Ranch helps everyone in the family on course

Two of the more common complaints we hear from golfers, or at least would-be golfers, is that the game takes too much time away from the family and that a round of golf is too expensive. Those are both valid concerns, of course. In fact, when looking at the national issue of how to grow the game, finding ways to make the game more affordable and take less time are often at the top of every list. Sure, the days of a dad spending the day at the country club with friends while the kids stay at home are [...]

Black Butte Ranch hosting free SNAG classes on Aug. 5 and 19 at Lakeside Activity Center

Black Butte Ranch’s SNAG (Starting New At Golf) program has really started to take off since we first began to offer it last summer. It started quietly, first occasionally being offered in the Lakeside Activity Center. Earlier this year, Black Butte Ranch’s staff of golf professionals took the program on the road to the children of Sisters Elementary School. And we have also began introducing SNAG each Thursday at Glaze Meadow to the kids at the Junior Putting Challenge. But that is just not enough for our tastes. At noon on Friday, Aug. 5, the first of two August [...]

Battle at the Butte’s new team format a nod to growing trend in golf

Two-person team event tees off on Aug. 27 at Black Butte Ranch Quick question: What is your favorite professional golf tournament? Perhaps it’s the rich tradition of The Masters, the sheer brutality of the U.S. Open, or the rugged links conditions of the British Open. For others, it just might be The Ryder Cup. After all, nothing generates more passion in golf than competing for country as part of a team. Well, Black Butte Ranch can’t quite offer the experience of playing for your country. But with a new 36-hole, two-person team format, the 2016 Battle at the Butte [...]

Coming in August: A parent-child bonding experience like none other

Golf has stood the test of time in large part because the game has been for generations passed on from father to son and mother to daughter like a sacred family heirloom. That spirit of bonding is baked into the game itself, a vital ingredient for golf’s future. It is in this vein that years ago Black Butte Ranch created the Adult/Child Three-Day Golf Schools. Open to golfers of all abilities, the schools are designed for a young golfer to share the learning experience with a parent. There may be no better bonding experience. With three sessions in August [...]

Making golf fun a key to introducing junior golfers to the game

If you are a parent AND a golfer, chances are you have thought about just how best to introduce your child to the game. Whether it’s the PGA of America, cable television outlets, our major golf magazines, it seems just about everyone has some advice on how to teach kids golf. All offer solid tips, no doubt. But one surefire way to get a child interested in golf is by making the game fun for them. While many golfers’ reactions might be to think, “Well, golf IS fun,” remember how difficult the game can be for beginners. And remember [...]

Conditions report: Crew into summer maintenance program

Conditions report: Crew into summer maintenance program Golf course maintenance has a certain ebb and flow to the season. Each year the crew springs into action as the courses wake from the winter slumber, then it spends the subsequent months pouring over the fine details of both Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow in an all-out effort to get Black Butte Ranch’s two championship golf course in prime condition by the peak of the golf season. Then, suddenly, the focus shifts. As the heat of summer takes hold the crew’s efforts turn to maintaining those conditions rather than constantly trying [...]

EWGA Championship a boon for women’s golf and Black Butte Ranch

EWGA Championship a boon for women's golf and Black Butte Ranch Golf can be an intimidating game, especially for women. No wonder, really. More than 75 percent of golfers are male, and the game can confound even its greatest players. With this in mind, the Executive Women’s Golf Association was formed. The EWGA creates an environment in which women can play more, play better, have more fun, and make friends. It is what golf is all about. It’s right there in the organization’s mission statement. Take Tam Mills, an area resident who recently joined the EWGA’s Central Oregon Chapter. [...]
